GERIATRIC PSYCHOLOGY

Supporting the emotional and cognitive health of older adults with dignity, compassion, and expertise.

At Healthy Minds International, we offer specialized psychological services tailored to meet the unique needs of older adults. Geriatric psychology is a subfield of clinical psychology focused on the assessment and treatment of mental health concerns related to aging. Our team provides in-home and facility-based services to ensure accessibility and continuity of care.

Residential Mental Health Services

We work closely with skilled nursing facilities, caregivers, and physicians to provide:

  • Diagnostic assessment and individualized treatment planning

  • Individual psychotherapy

  • Psychological and neuropsychological testing

  • Behavior management consultation and planning

  • Family therapy, education, and caregiver support

Addressing the Complexities of Aging

Older adults often face emotional challenges related to:

  • Medical illness or disability

  • Chronic pain or physical limitations

  • Loss of independence

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Anxiety, depression, or adjustment disorders

These challenges can be compounded by cognitive changes or complex medication regimens. Our psychologists are trained to identify the psychological factors contributing to emotional and behavioral changes—and to distinguish between normal aging, mood disorders, and neurocognitive disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, or Parkinson’s-related cognitive decline.

We often collaborate with primary care physicians to ensure accurate diagnosis and coordinated care. For example, symptoms of depression—such as fatigue, low motivation, or sleep changes—can sometimes mimic physical illness. When psychological treatment is provided, clients may experience reduced distress, fewer medical visits, and improved quality of life.

Family Involvement & Compassionate Care

Psychological challenges in older adulthood can affect not only the individual but also spouses and caregivers. We provide:

  • Psychoeducation for families

  • Joint sessions for caregiving support

  • Guidance for managing progressive illnesses like Alzheimer’s or Lewy Body dementia

  • Grief and anticipatory loss counseling

Our interventions aim to preserve dignity, improve emotional functioning, and enhance overall well-being—while reducing distress for both clients and their loved ones.
